You do know that they have to pay out your gear right?
Also you can fight them to get the price you want to get for your property.

They will always come out with an offer the first time that is less than what you deserve, (unless the car/bike is BRAND NEW and it's in your policy to get full price in the first year) You can counter.
    Always do you're homework.

I suggest getting clippings of vehicles that are the same year make and model as yours from Auto Trader or any site that people resell their bikes, and submitting them to the insurance company and stating that this is what fair market value is.
Typically they will counter closer to what you should get for the vehicle.
That goes for your gear too.
Helmets, jackets, gloves, what ever it is... if they are damaged claim them. Get your money and buy new gear.

(all this is assuming you're not at fault)
If you're at fault you might want to limit your claim to the bike.
They keep track of what they've paid out to you.
    It's like a rap sheet ...

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
I did know that they have to pay out for gear. I also know the trick about getting clippings with market value. My point with state farm is I didn't really need to do any of this. There was no debate about market value, which is more than I can say for some of my friends experiences with other companies.

My experience with Ontario insurance: (warning - might be a long, disjointed rant)

41 years old, valid class GM license, G for 25 years, M for 26 years, no convictions, no claims.

Continuously insured from 1985 - 2006 on various bikes and/or cars, at various companies (I shopped around every couple years to get the best rate I could).

Found myself unemployed in 2006 facing a pay rent or pay insurance situation. I paid the rent and parked the vehicles.

2008, I am good to go again, and I get quoted $125 per month to cover my 1995 Neon, my 2003 R6 and $30,000 contents insurance. I say "sign me up " . This is at State Farm.

2 months later I get registered mail stating that because I didn't have continuous coverage my rate is actually $262 per month. That isn't in the budget, I'm afraid.

So I am currently paying $130 per month for liability insurance on my car only. No bike insurance. No apartment insurance.

Seems in times like these, there should be some kind of protection for people who through no fault of their own, have to pay rates that usually go to 16 year olds.

    /end rant

State Farm also, Im 29 no tickets in the last 5 years and paying $790 for the full year(full coverage and $500 Deductable). About $66 a month.

Ive had 2 claims in the last 3 years both not my fault, rear ended, and attempted bike theft last summer. State Farm payed out $4300 and $2200(They covered everything on the bike, including Cover and Tank Pads etc.) and my rate actually went down from $100 a month last year to the current $66

State Farm has dif. policies then most other insurance companys,

They will not insure just a motorcycle, you must have a vehichle currently insured with them for atleast a year I believe. Come the summer months I take the insurance off my car and just leave fire and theft on in it for $5 bucks a month.

They do not give discounts for Drivers Ed Courses or Defensive Courses, as they already give some of the cheapest rates(depending on your record, and location)

And also, you must have current insurnce with someone else when switching to them other wise you start with higher rates, as said earlier.

I can completely relate to this.
A few years back I only had a bike as my main mode of transportation, and I was insured with State Farm Also.
I had a serious NOT AT FAULT accident.
    Bike written off.
Me in hospital almost written off.
Took me almost a year walk.
Any how. Sure they paid out for the bike and gear. Great right.
But they Cancelled my insurance. Meaning when I tried to get insurance almost a year and a half later when I was healthy again. I was black balled and sent to facility.
I hope that things like these will come to some important persons attention and these issues with lapses in insurance (not insureds fault) will not be considered when quoting policies.

Smart to leave the fire and theft on your car, at least it keeps you auto insurance continuous.
Every Insurance company prefers that you have CONTINUOUS insurance and current insurance before they take you on.

    NOTE:
Also keep in mind any cancellations of your policy including for reasons of non payment will increase your rates.

    Gotta love the insurance mafia.
