I was reminded today why I have chosen not to ride street any more.
Was headed to a wedding about 4:00 this afternoon on the 60 to 57 interchange just in time to see a Marine on an SV650 rolling across the pavement. Immediately grabbed stopped, grabbed my first aid kit, and ran over to the guy who was obviously in a lot of pain. Got him to sit down and called the paramedics. Luckily a nurse also stopped and took over care of the kid from me long enough for me to pick up the bike -- which was leaking fuel from the gas cap -- and move it far enough away from us that if it sparked up we would be okay.
From what I gather from the lady who saw the whole thing the kid came into the turn very very hot and clipped the concrete guard rail. This in turn flipped him off the bike onto the top of the guard rail at which point he slid off and slammed his (helmeted) head on the pavement.
When I got to him he was obviously woozy and could not speak. It took some effort to get him to sit down, at which point he took his helmet off despite my advice to and threw up what appeared to be a soft drink tinged with blood. He looked close to shock at that point and the nurse and I helped move him into the shock position while we waited for the ambulance. Kept him concious through talking to him constantly and as comfortable as possible until the paramedics arrived. When I left him he was being loaded into the ambulance on a full board with a neck brace and is hopefully in stable condition.

Based on the description of the accident from the lady, and a quick examination of the bike and his helmet the kid has a broken leg and foot on the side that he clipped the rail, internal bleeding, and broken ribs, plus a severe concussion. Hopefully, its not as life threatening as it appeared at that moment.
I guess my hole point in this story is ride safe, gear up, and try not to do stupid shit on the road. The bike was in excellent condition and could have been ridden away. On a closed course it would have been a very minor incident, but on the street with concrete K rails and zero runout room it can threaten your life. It very much reminded me of the video that shows what would happen to Racers if there were major obstacles in the runout area. I'll be honest I've seen some bad on track crashes that have shaken me up, but this one had me counting every second until the paramedics showed up.
Ride safe, wear your gear, and be smart about how your ride.
And gear wise... today has severely shaken my confidence in helmets not made by Arai, AGV, or another equivalent. It was a relatively minor scuff that did not dent the foam inside or reach past the fiberglass -- I have a nearly identical mark and impact point on an Arai helmet from a highside. And it knocked the kid senseless.
