also keep in mind not ALL gas stations are open 24/7.. I've hit towns late evening and all the gas stations were closed making it a PITA to find gas.. that's when the GPS comes in handy and a lot of them have phone numbers for the place stored in the GPS so you can call and see if they are open before driving out of your way..

Good point. I'm going about the fuel issue with the idea " see gas station, fill up, everyime" .

I also looked up the extended fuel tank for the BMW and I might of narrowed it down even more. I thought I looked at the spec sheet, but the GS Adventure already comes with the 8.7 gallon tank, factory. Where as the plain GS only has the 5.3. Again with a modest 53mpg rate, that 8.7 will net me 470 miles or so a tank. Now that is perfect.

Im afraid so. If it was possible to keep it I would. But the prices of the bikes im looking at are up there. New is a last resort option, but im looking for a year to 3 year old R 1200 GS Adventure. Which is around 14k to 18k, it seems. New they run around near 20k. At least i could get 11 to 12k for the 1098 and make the purchase a bit easier. The bike is really the hardest thing about this trip. Once this is done, the rest should be easy.

I got the day off today, hopefully if I have enough time Im gonna head to the dealer, take a look see, test ride ( if possible) and talk numbers.

What's weird is that I just got the new issue of Motorcyclist and the whole issue is like dedicated to the Multistrada and BMW R 1200/800 GS reviews. Weird, eh? Perhaps a little but of irony and fate?

go for it man. you don't want to look back and think "what if i never tried it?" (a little rossi-ism there for ya). definitely try and get top dollar for your 1098, as it's probably one of the best in the area. good luck to you, take and post tons of pics and may the force be with you.
