    Default How-to: Safety Wiring Ideas

There is one thread already that shows how to drill your bolts, here. And there is also the 2005 Basic Track Prep Thread, but I thought I would show how I did the wiring on my 2006 "V"

I used the quick clips everywhere I could to avoid having to re-do the wiring every time I popped off the wheel/did routine maintenance. I also covered the wire in clear vinyl tubing to keep the wire clean and protected.

I didn't get a photo of my drain plug or dipstick today, but I will get that later.

Post up if you have any questions.

ah fuck, i had no idea there was a pull tab on the stator cover for the other end of the filter wire. i drilled through the engine case bolt you see in the same photo.

whats with the third section going to the fender mount on the front caliper bolts?

everything else looks good, for the drain plug, i just drilled through the fairing mount.

perfect timing posting this up, im in the middle of doing this this week (slowly).

    edit:
how would you safety wire this? leo vince exhaust hanger, there is a flange or something that concaves smoothly... its an hex head inside the "cover" and everytime i took it out to retighten it there was no promise that it lined up in the same spot.

Post a better pic from the side, and a little zoomed out so we can see what you're working with.

As for the wire going to the fender, I just did that so the whole assembly would dangle when it's off, so I have one less thing I have to keep track of off of the bike when the wheel and calipers are off..

lastly, on the rear caliper bolts, did you drill through the entire bolt or just from a side diag to the center out?

Wait till you get your new rearsets and see if it gives you something to drill into like mine. Or wait for DD to chime in.

I drilled through diagonally for the rear caliper bolts.

where to drill the other end is not the problem, the problem lies in where/how to drill the exhaust mount with that cover that completely hides the bolt.

Do you need the cover? Can you just remove it? Or drill through it? You could drill every edge so no matter how it goes in you have a point to wire from.

Nate, I didnt see a need to safety wire the exhaust hanger myself, wasnt required in my rulebook. Maybe just loctite it and call it good? Other than that, yeah, wait to se what kind of bracket you get with aftermarket rearsets.

Here's a few more idears for how I wired things on my pile (06-10):

I usually just fish these guys through one hole at the track, whatever works.

And there's a hell of an easier way to wire these stupid finger hose clamps. My rulebook states you can remove small clamps like this all together and basically just use safety wire as a hose clamp. I now take .030 wire and loop it around the hose twice and wire twist it to itself.

Calipers you can do like this, but I've since made mine like Tamer with spring clips, saves a substantial amount of time on a tire change.

It still kinda puzzles me the kind of safety wire that passes tech. I'm not picking on you guys, because I know what tech is looking for in terms of safety wire, but what good is it if it still allows the bolt/screw to turn?
