Oil Filters known to work on 99-05 R6 and 06-08 R6S models

    ACDelco # PF2057
    Amsoil EaOM103
    Carquest 85358
    Emgo 10-82232
    Fram ph6017a
    K&n kn303
    Mobil1 M1-110
    Napa gold 1358
    OEM Honda #5410-MCJ-000
    Perf-form j-503
    Purolator PL14610
    Supertech 7317
    Wix 51358
    Yamaha 3fv-13440-00

    06-08 R6 filters

    M1-108
    Supertech 6607

Most people prefer the Mobil1, K&N, or Purolator filter, and discourage Fram, although any of those will fit.

    Motor Oils

If you read the manual you will notice it says to use Non-EC (energy conserving) oils only. This is what you should look for on the back of the oil bottle, it will not say Energy Conserving on the bottom. Because your motorcycle has a wet clutch, and is actually partially submerged in the oil, some say your clutch will slip. Debates rage on as to whether this is a needed concern, or just a marketing ploy playing on your fears, to get you to spend extra money for motorcycle specific oils.

15w50, 10w40, 5w30 and 5w20 are the most common oils used in our bikes. Brands are generally personal preference, but most here will recommend Mobil1.

Others have reported no ill-effect from running oils with the EC marking. Personally, I've used EC rated oils for quite a while, in various applications (endurance racing, spring racing, street use), with no problems on a variety (OEM Yamaha, OEM Suzuki, and aftermarket) of clutches.

Do your own experiments to see what works best for you. If you use an EC rated oil, and your clutch slips, it is very simple to change the oil back to a non-EC oil, and have no long term effects.

Synthetic oils provide the best protection, but at a premium price. Whether or not it is an advantage in street riding is up for debate. You can switch to synthetic oil whenever you want. Lets not forget, that many manufacturers use synthetic oil straight from the factory!

Put in 2.5qts with a filter change, and add oil as needed. Generally, you'll need approx 2.8qts with filter change. Be careful not to overfill.

The following link breaks down the commonly used filters and also supplies pictures of those filters cut open:

Great post. But I'm gonna play the devil 's advocate on the using regular oil part. Of course it will bring up the age old debate, but its a good discussion. I used Mobil 1 in the past and I didnt like the clutch feel at all with the M1 in there. It felt sporadic, slippery and numb with the M1 in there. Then i changed the oil back to Motul, and whammo back to normal again. Maybe it has something to do with the slipper clutch?

Maybe someone can shed more light onto that?? Does differernt oil effect normal clutches and slipper clutches differently?

I've always used the Yamalube brand oil along with a Yamaha oil filter, never had any issues with any of the driveline components or clutch.

    99-05 and 06-08s
purolator Pure One, PL14612. it was rated #1 in SAE tests.
also for these years/model, you can buy any filter that fits a mazda miata, lets say from 1995-2004 miata(because I can't remember all the years they were made that used this filter)

yah this is a great post, i use Shell Rotella T Synthetic in mine, love the way it shifts. i used Mobil 1 M1-108 for my oil filter but my next one will be a K&N simply because of the nut welded onto the top so its easier to get on/off. i'm quite sick of using the screwdriver poking through the filter and gettin oil all over.

I use a filter removal tool that fits on a socket wrench, works really well. You should be able to get one where you buy the filter.

I may use the purolator Pure One, PL14612 next time.

I have always used the kn 303, but i was always able to get a deal on them through ajusa.com, but the've raised their prices on them recently. I don't want to pay $14 for an oil filter!
