Question Need help: Electrical Issue (display turns off during riding)

I feel like a prodigal son that only returns when he wants something, but....

I haven't been riding much lately, so last night I cleaned out the fuel tank, added some new gas, aired the tires, jump started the bike and let it run for a while. Everything seemed pretty good.

This morning, I got ready to go to work, the bike started up fine, and about five minutes into my ride I notice the display is going crazy. It looked like it was resetting or something every couple minutes and sometimes in rapid succession. By resetting I mean the speedometer would shut off, the needle would peg to the right and drop back to 0, all the lights would turn off, and then in a second everything would start operating again.

Is it possible that the battery has finally met it's end and that's what is causing this? Last I checked it with a voltmeter, the readings were pretty weak. Or is it likely that something separate is causing the issue? Really just trying to figure it out before I splerge $100 on a battery (speaking of which, is this too shit to use? Thanks, old friends.

    check your fuses first.

this seemed to be similar to the first problem i had on my old 99 but I can't remember what the remedy was only that I carried around a bunch of spare fuses.

Hm, that'd beat buying a new battery. I'll check them out once I get home.

I've been dwelling on it a bit today at work, and I'm convincing myself it's the stator. In which case, I have no idea what to do. I don't even know where the damn thing is located. ha

stator is under the left side cover. biggest one on that side.

it's gonna be the regulator/rectifier before it's the stator.

have you wired the ignition to a switch? Thats what was happening to me one day at the track. Discovered the wires going into the ignition switch where the key used to be were loose and was causing the gauges to do exactly what you described.

Hmm... so the plot thickens. I went out to the bike after work yesterday and it was completely dead. I tried push starting it. Nothing. Called my wife to come jump me and decided I'd start tearing the bike down while I waited. I tightened the battery posts, disconnected and blew into all the connectors I could access (everything looked good), pulled and inspected the fuses (looked good), and looked for any place there might be a ground issue. After about 15 minutes, I decided to give it another shot and sure enough... the bike started right up. None of the problems I had on the way to work happened on the way home.

Still not sure what the problem was. The battery posts were pretty loose, so it's possible that was the issue. I'll keep watching it and report back if/when I know more.

Also, thanks for the help, fellas. Makes me miss being active on here.
