Unhappy 2003 R6 chain rubbing help *Urgent*

Hi Guy's. I felt some mild rubbing whilst on the way to the gym this morning, i know that the chains runs along a guard on top of the swing arm so just rode as normal. How ever, once i started to get closer to the gym it slowly started getting worse.

I finished at the gym and made my way to work, it was now a serious rubbing and only got worse and worse until i got to work. Upon arrival i've noticed some metal filings on the swing arm and it seems the chain is rubbing on the inside of the rotation (so the bottom when the chain is making its way to the back sproket and the top when its making its way to the front sproket.

Because of the covers etc i can't see what it's rubbing on, only that the metal filings seem to be worse around the sproket area(front).

I'm almost scared of riding it home and need to insight urgently please. I do not want to permanently ruin anything but would like to fix it at home. (Am at work now as this only happen about 30 minutes ago)

Should i get the bike recovered by breakdown service?

    Thanks for any info.

    Ed

Something is a miss with the counter shaft. There was an issue with the nut coming off and if that happened it would bugger the shaft pretty good. Dont ride it till you find out what it is! Hopefully its not the counter shaft bearing from the chain being run to tight.

    Hi,

Thanks for that. It's funny you should mension about the chain. I did tighten it just last weekend as it was far too loose. I still left about an inch play in it though so didn't think it was overly tight. I may have been mistaken though.

I'm am dearly hoping that the front sproken nut is just loose which i can do my self.

Would the shaft bearings going still produce metal shavings from the play as a result?

    Thanks
    Ed

    word!

and fyi, 1 inch is too tight. a loose chain is better than a tight chain, if its too tight it prevents the suspension from traveling properly

Werd, you want about 1.5" total travel in the chain right between the front and rear sprockets.

That is good to know. I typically prefer a loose chain as well..and I have numerous people tell me that my chain is too loose. Its usually around 1.5" of play, which I figure puts it in spec with my little bit of weight on the bike.
