Default 2001 Conversion to '04 swingarm and '00 R1 forks

    2001 Conversion to '04 swingarm and '00 R1 forks

I've posted this on two other forums that I was really active on years ago with very little and no luck. My friend powerban led me over here and it's already looking more promising. Now, are there any other '99-'02 owners here?

I've found the R1 fork conversion thread here:
    r6central.com - R1 fork conversion

And it says it was done on an '02 but I didnt see that it listed the year model of the parts used for the swap.

It has been over a year since I was researching this. Bsully and FatFree have done the singarm mod and inverted fork mod but not the same forks that I have. Powerban has done the same fork mod that I'm working on. The threads with most of that info are here:

    FatFree's threads
    Main Mod thread:
    R6Messagenet.com
Minor mod update thread w/ pix:
    R6Messagenet.com
More misc info, this thread is really about his R1 rear wheel conversion but there may be some other info in here related to my project:

And some info here but it's really spread out:

These guys dont really post on the forums anymore so I'm just posting to see if anyone else has done this and had any words of wisdom or if anyone had links to any guides. I have the '04 wheels and swingarm. And the '00 R1 forks and triples. Plus a ton of other parts like chain, sprockets, case covers, levers, etc. that I'm about to put on. I have the bike at my brother's shop now and I'm headed over there tomorrow morning to get started taking measurements and tearing it down so I can get started. This is the list of considerations I'm working on:

    1. Press out '01 R6 steering stem and press into '00 R1 lower triple clamp. The stem is tapered and so it must be pressed down through the clamp for removal from the R6 clamp and then up through the R1 clamp for the re-install.
    2. Shim front calipers in w/ 2mm washers.
    3. 2004 swingarm endcaps w/ '01 spacer on outside of right side end cap, then tighten collar to take up slack.
    4. '04 triangles and dogbone will give 5/8ths inch rise in rear.
    5. 2001 R6 Front lines, calipers, master cylinder.
    6. 70 series front tire.

Any info that you guys can contribute would be a big help. Thanks

    After 3 hours:

    8/26/08 Removed swingarm:

So far I've gotten it most of the way torn down. I think that I'm going to start with the front end. Right now I'm working on getting the '01 steering stem pressed (hammered) out of the '01 lower triple. Like I said, it's been a while that I've been working on other projects so I have to dig out all my old stuff to see what all I have but I'll start a parts list here and work on it as I go:

    Scotts damper
    2000 R1 forks w/ Racetech internals
    1998 R1 triple clamps
    2004 R6 swingarm/shock/linkage
2004 R6 front and rear wheels
    R1 Throttle tube
    Carbon fiber R1 front fender
    Corner2Corner Racing mod'd rear rotor
    Pazzo levers
    Harris GP High-rise Clip-ons
    Factory Pro engine case covers
    OESaccessories frame sliders
    EK 520ZZZ Quadra-x Ring chain
    Thrust cro-mo 17t front sprocket
    Supersprox 53t rear sprocket
    Giles Tooling chain adjusters
    ...cant think, more later...

Update, 9-9-08 - Getting the wheels stripped down, sizing up the swingarm, mounted the forks:

    11/9/08 - Finished wheels
    11/10/08 - Finished rotors
11/11/08 - Got tires on the wheels:

    11/12/08 - Whole buncha stuffs:

11/14/08 - OMG, finally finished (sort of, it's road worthy but I have more mods coming):

    Roars like a lion:

I also added some shims at the pivot on either side of the swingarm in an attempt to find the best balance between centering the back wheel and keeping the sprockets aligned. I used 3/32 of an inch on the clutch lever side and 1/16th of an inch on the brake lever side. That was just my best guess as far as alignment and it seems to be wearing the sprocket evenly so far.

Also, the rear end conversion raises the back end approximately 5/8ths of an inch. This is good because it's the easiest way to raise the back end on this bike. You can shim the shock on the newer bikes to jack the back end up a few mm but you cant do it with these first gen bikes. So the swap has a net positive effect on geometry. This seems to be the the consensus as to the best way to set this bike's suspension up in the track rider and suspension expert community that I've spoken with.

    *edit*
The 5/8ths inch rise in the back is way too much. I'm in the process of building an adjustable suspension link so I can get the rear end right where I want it. I'm thinking the hight will work well about 1/8th inch rise above factory height.

Also thought I would add my most recent pic, as I've already posted it everywhere else but here.

    And another, more recent.

    *edit*

    This is my update:

I just went down to the garage and swapped out the '04 triangles for the '01 triangles and it gave me the exact 1/4 inch drop that I was looking for. I estimate that the rear is now approximately 1/4 - 5/16ths inch above original factory height. This is the range I wanted to be in.

I measured from swingarm to marked point on the tail, 26 and 15/16ths inches with the '04's and then 26 and 11/16ths inches with the '01's in place.

I just saved myself the 100 bucks or more I would have spent on that adjustable lowering link I was building. And now I can ride my bike. Needless to say, I'm happy.

i cant help you out on too much about it but i will say deff keep updating this...and i got a few questions...are you going to powdercoat the frame black since the 2nd gen swingarm is black? also is there a particular reason youre picking pazzos over ASV? theyre both the same price but ASV has far more adjustments
Good judgment comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad judgment.

I stripped the swingarm down to bare aluminum so it matches the frame for now. Down the road, I may look at powder coat or por15 for the frame, sub and swingarm. And I chose the Pazzos because I bought them used, off a guy on another forum, CHEAP

    I think it's a tad longer?

Nice project, not sure if it's really all worth it, but bikes are fun and easy enough to work with.

Yeah, what is the advantage of doing this? It seems like alot of work and money and I'm not exactly sure what the gains are. It seems cool enough though.
