This happened to me today!! Only the nut backed off and got lodged onto the sprocket. So once I got the bike stopped the back tire would roll about a foot forward or reverse before stopping. Scared the crap out of me at the time, but was relieved it wasnt something more serious once a was at home in the garage.
never happened to me but i will take care of it.
I didn't have this issue on my '05, I actually took my bike to get the battery tenderized one day last winter, while I was there they said there the recall bulletin, I had 2 hours so I said wth and they took care of it. In the end I got a fully recharged battery, cleaned fairings, and this recall done all for nothing at my local stealership.
Had this happen to me last year at about 25k miles, luckily it didnt bind up the chain to much/throw the sprocket and poke a hole in the engine case.

Lots of new 1st gen guys here. Where is that old 99-02 thread? I searched for a long time and couldnt find it.

Bringing this back again, I'm very late obviously.
How long does recalls last? Can I bring this in to have serviced now? And is any Yamaha dealer ok to use? Any documentation I need to bring with me?
THanks

They just check your VIN to see if it has been done before, If it hasn't and they have parts on hand they should do it right off, of course if they have the time slot available. If they don't they should make an appointment and they'll take care of you. If they don't have parts on hand, they'll order them then after they arrive they'll call you up and ask you to come in and they'll do it.
I know pretty damn almost redundant, but it's pretty simple.
and for some reason Yamaha dealerships don't keep this damn retaining nut & washer in stock...bike has been in the shop a week now and they don't even have the part yet...what a joke....mine came off twice during triple digit speeds....but hey, it just holds the sprocket and chain in place, not like its important or anything.
