Exclamation Chopping stock exhaust? good or bad? Backpressure?

I just recently bought a used 2003 R6 and it came with the stock exhaust chopped down. It sounds decent, not as nice as an aftermarket pipe, but I was riding it for a while on the highway and pulled off the side of the road and pulled the clutch in and it just died. I was shocked and quite angry seeing as how this was my first ride with it!!!! Just wondering what would cause something like that to happen? Is it because there is not enough backpressure from the exhaust or is that a description of the coil recall problem? It also does it when I am just idleing in a stopped position and then I crack on the throttle quickly up to about 8,000 rpm and it will die. This is only sometimes however. I am looking for some advice please help.

    to the site.

When you say it dies after you crack the throttle, does it die at a high RPM, or when it goes back down to idle? What RPM does it idle at?

I am not sure exactly what it idles at, but when I crack on it, it drops down to idle and then dies. It doesn't stay up there for very long either, like it goes down very fast. It is kind of hard to tell exactly when it actually dies though. But another thing is when I gradually bring it down to a lower rpm just by coasting and without using the clutch, then it will stay running. Very inconsistent with how it is acting. I am not sure also if the previous owner has not ridden it in a while. Only 3,000 miles on the bike though. Thanks for the input.

Only 3000 miles on an 03? Nice find! If the bike's been sitting for a while, you may want to run some fuel injector cleaner, and an oil change wouldn't hurt.

It's hard to say what it could be without seeing the bike in person. Make sure the idle is in spec and make adjustments with the gold-colored idle adjuster knob on the right side of the motor.

If you can think of any more details be sure to post up.

My bike's stock exhaust is chopped, and I've never had a problem like that, so I'm going to wager thats not it...

i noticed that it idles lower when it is warmed up. it idles at about 1800 when i first start it up and then after i ride a while it will idle at about 1300 or even lower. what is the right idleing spec for an 03 r6?

1250~1350 rpm is the spec, so that's good. The high idle is supposed to happen... it helps the bike warm up.

dont qoute me on this; sounds like the bike is dipping just below that idle speed maybe try turning the idle needle up just a little like maybe a 1/4 turn at the most and see what it does
GOOO!!!! RUUUUN!!!! get to the choppa!!!
