I wouldnt be able to keep up with you on the track. Just like you cant keep up with me in here. I'm the brains, you're the brawn. Lets just keep it that way.

^ dude... did you read this post:

Wow. Point of hangin off the bike = lower center of gravity, (offsetting is also accurate as you're tossing the CG below the vertical centerline of the bike. You offset it and you lower it as a result.) Benefits = increased traction, not driving to edge of tire's contact patch, ability to carry greater speed with less lean angle = ability to go faster through the same turn with the same lean angle on the bike. *EDIT* Another benefit of that CG being lower and offset is that it's not sitting up on top of the bike, so adjustments made to your body positioning at this time will have less effect on the suspension becoming unhappy and buckin you off as a result.

Personally Volcom's way of stating it makes more sense to me. But I think we can all agree: hanging off the bike = ability to go faster before wadding it.
    quit now dude

Awesome! I'm actually kind of surprised some of you track vets still have some on the front. Really the faster you go and the more you lean the less strips you will have. If you do a track day they'll more than likely be gone at days end. Though some smoking fast local club racers still have some strip up front. I do/did not however (120/70 * 190/55)

Which basically means the same thing, I know. I just wanted to be very precise and clear for those of us that are new to this concept.
Actually, these two comments don't exactly mean the same thing. First of all, yes the purpose of hanging off the bike is to keep the bike more upright and to reduce lean angle for a given corner.

Second, getting a bike to turn in faster depends on how hard and how quick you counter-steer, not how much you hang off the bike.

Now, there is a technique you can use once you are already in a corner, at max lean angle, with knee on the deck, that can help TIGHTEN up your line in a corner without you having to lean the bike over further and that is done by lowering your center of gravity (you are already hanging off, so this would require you to just lower your upper body and head a little more into the corner). This might be what you are taking about when you say that "The purpose of hanging off is to make the bike turn sharper for a given lean angle." We call this the "Hook Turn" at the California Superbike School.

But, if you form is correct and you counter steer enough, pretty soon once you go fast enough, they'll be gone, front and rear. Then, if you ever step up to a 190 rear, you'll see it come back for a short period as you get used to the wider rear. Get faster with that and it'll be gone.

+1 on saving it for the track though. But of course, to each his own there.

Keep in mind though, chicken strips arent the ultimate indicator of fast. You can go slow with bad form as dzuydzuydzuydzuyd mentioned, shoving the bike too far under you, and have no chicken strips. Or you can go faster with better form and still have a 1/4" chicken strip left over.

While doing a track day, my buddy asked me if I trail brake a lot. I do. He said he asked because I had no strips on my front. So, I imagine lack of strips on the front can be caused by agressive counter steering and trail braking?

^^What tires do you use? And Im guessing you use a 190 rear right?

I'm sorta curious as well.. I eat up the chicken strips on my front tires WAY before my rears... Just curious on what I do that seems to contradict the norm..

Depends on the profile of your tires, size, steering geometry, a lot of things...
