    Default Race Glass Repair

I just picked up an 06 from another track rider (WERA racer) for next year and I'm looking to fix up the race glass on it.

I've been searching, but haven't found any real good sites on procedures for the best repair techniques. The glass has every problem I can think of, holes, cracks, missing mounting points(tail section), broken mounting points(upper fairing). I'd like to be able to get the glass back to 'new' as I have a few months before it's warm enough here to ride again.

Any good links or advice? I plan on fixing the glass, then repainting it completely... gotta come up with a scheme I like.

    Thanks

You could fix that problem with a call to Attack Race Bodies for a new set of glass!

The 01 needs a set of track bodywork, but that's on the back burner. I'm trying to save a little bit by fixing up this set

You can at least fix up the mounting points by working in some kevlar fabric in the area to make it stronger.

Nice pick up dude. I saw that thing for sale there too. I think I might pick up the TTX Shock that was on that thing if he didn't already sell it.

I would like someone to make a set of race bodywork out of the same plastic that dirt bike front fenders are made out of. That stuff is pretty light and is nearly indestructible! I'd buy a set.

^It would be nice, but I wouldnt get your hopes up. All the injection molds, (multi million dollars worth to do a whole set,) it would take to do that would make it a loser, unless they sold the bodywork for $1500 a set.

Step 1. Sand sand sand. Just sand and when you think you are done, sand some more. Mulitple grits.

Step 2. Go to home depot an get he marine fiberglass resin and cloth.

Step 3. I applyed a generous goop of the resin on the crack, smashed down the fiberglass cloth, and reapplyed more resin, scraping away any extra. Put some heat on it and let it dry for an hour.

    Step 4. Sand sand sand.

Step 5. Re drill any mounting holes.

    Step 6. Paint.

Sounds easy enough but trust me. It sucks.
This to a point. Start with 120 grit to remove any paint and expose the cracks don't use anything over 120 as you will take out more fiberglass than is needed finish with about 240 or so. Then get the resin and glass. Cut the glass into extremely small pieces (think individual fibers) then mix those with some of the resin, the wetter the better. Paint the repair area with a bit of resin then apply the resin/glass mix. Allow it to dry then sand flat. Paint area again with resin. Apply a layer or 2 of glass than has been impregnated with resin to the repair area allow to dry and feather the edges. Should look like new.

That's basically what I do at work. I'm an advanced composite material repair tech in the military.
