I'm getting a lot more comfortable right now, finding the right rpms to shift at. The guy I bought it from threw on -1/+3 sprockets, so I've been shifting at about 4k rpms when just riding around. If I'm having problems with riding the clutch should I be shifting a little later, or even sooner? And I'll look into the brake pads, thanks Azr6.

its not the rpm's you need to worry about, its the grab point of the clutch...sit in first gear an slowly let the clutch out without giving it gas. When the bike feels like it wants to start moving on its own without gas you have found the grab point. I dunno how you grab the clutch lever but try with just your pointer and middle finger instead of your whole hand.

So the whole shifting thing, much better. Brakes haven't bought them yet. However, the smell has gone away with the shifting work and I also put on a new chain and sprockets, which seems to have helped to. Does this even make sense to anyone?

Shifting, yes. Chain and sprockets, no.

So I haven't smelled it in about a week. Hopefully it was something other than my "terrific" riding, but either way I'm happy with it. Thanks for all the help.

They do have a wet clutch, but I've smelled my clutch being hot before (drag strip). Dunno how it works, really.
